What We Actually Do
What We Actually Do: An Introduction
Most people come to Riverstone Wealth Planners with a similar assumption. They think a financial advisor is someone who manages their investments. Picks funds, monitors performance, rebalances when the market moves. Something important but ultimately transactional.
That's part of what we do. But it's a small part.
The relationships I've built with clients over nearly two decades look nothing like that description. I am often the first person they call when something significant happens in their financial life. A job change. A divorce. An inheritance. A bonus that came with a tax question nobody warned them about. A parent who needs care and suddenly the family is having conversations about money that nobody prepared for.
That's what we mean when we say we act as your personal 911 and 411. When something urgent happens financially, we're the first call. And when you have a question, any question, about money, taxes, investments, or a decision you're trying to think through, we're the resource. Not a call center. Not a portal. A real person who knows your situation and picks up the phone.
Why We Limit the Number of Clients We Take On
This kind of relationship isn't possible at scale. It requires knowing your clients deeply, staying current on their situations, and having the bandwidth to actually be present when they need you.
That's why we take on an extremely limited number of new clients each year. Not because we're exclusive for the sake of it, but because the alternative is becoming an advisor who manages accounts rather than relationships. We've seen what that looks like at large firms. It's not what we built Riverstone to be.
Every client we work with gets our full attention. Not a fraction of it.
We Go Well Beyond Investments
Investment management is one component of what we do. But the clients who get the most value from working with Riverstone are the ones who lean on us across their entire financial life.
That means ongoing tax planning throughout the year, not just a conversation in April. It means helping organize accounts that have accumulated across multiple institutions over the years into a coherent, coordinated strategy. It means building a financial plan that actually gets updated annually rather than sitting in a drawer. It means being the advisor who coordinates with your CPA and your estate attorney so nothing falls through the cracks.
The goal is clarity. When you know exactly where you stand, what your plan is, and who is paying attention, everything feels different. The financial anxiety that most people carry quietly in the background starts to lift. The decisions get easier because they're being made with the full picture in front of you.
How We Work With Clients
We work with clients in a variety of fee structures depending on what makes sense for their situation. Some relationships are purely fee based, where we charge a percentage of assets under management. Some begin with a comprehensive financial plan for a flat fee. Some involve a combination of approaches. We always explain the options clearly so you feel confident and informed before making any decisions.
There is no one size fits all approach here. The structure of the relationship should fit the client, not the other way around.
What This Series Covers
Over the next eight posts we're going to pull back the curtain on what working with Riverstone actually looks like. Not in the language of a brochure. In plain terms that give you a real picture of what we do, how we do it, and whether it might be the right fit for your situation.
The Investment Research Nobody Sees Most people assume boutique means less access to investment intelligence. The reality is the opposite. Direct manager relationships, monthly research across asset classes, and an investment process built on advanced training that goes directly into your portfolio without being filtered through a home office model.
The Ongoing Tax Planning Nobody Told You About Tax planning at Riverstone happens throughout the year, not just in April. We work proactively with your CPA to identify opportunities, close withholding gaps, and make sure decisions are coordinated before they become expensive surprises.
Why Your Accounts Being Scattered Is Costing You More Than You Think Old 401ks, IRAs at multiple institutions, a brokerage account from years ago. Most people have no idea what they actually own or what it's costing them. Bringing everything into a coherent strategy is often where the biggest early wins come from.
What Clarity Actually Does for Your Financial Life When you know exactly where you stand and what needs to happen next, the financial anxiety most people carry quietly in the background starts to lift. Clarity isn't a side effect of good planning. It's the point.
Your Personal CFO We are often the first call when something significant happens financially. A job change, an inheritance, a tax question, a major decision that needs a second set of eyes. That kind of accessibility is built into every relationship at Riverstone, not offered as an upgrade.
The Estate Planning Conversation Most Advisors Never HaveA financial plan and an estate plan should tell the same story. We partner directly with your estate planning attorney, share your completed financial plan so they're working from the full picture, and coordinate on gifting strategies, charitable planning, beneficiary designations, and account titling so nothing falls through the cracks between your investment life and your legacy.
What the First Year Working Together Actually Looks LikeMost people don't know what to expect when they start working with a new advisor. This post walks through the onboarding process, the planning work, and what the relationship looks like once everything is in place.
Each post stands on its own. But together they give you a complete picture of what a genuinely comprehensive advisory relationship looks like, and why it's different from what most people have experienced before.
If something in this series resonates and you'd like to have a straightforward conversation about your situation, reach out directly. The first call is free, there's no obligation, and we'll tell you honestly whether we think we're the right fit.
